In my opinion this is the best painting I've done so far*. A lot of people commented on how they like the blue of the water the best, (one person even thought he might like a painting with just the blue background only!) but I was surprised at how realistic the koi ended up looking.
The water really was that shade of blue. I took this picture from the dock of one of the famous 5 colour lakes in Fukushima.

*Said from the perspective of 2008. The reflection in the water is pretty bad.... I like to think I've done better than this since.
