As soon as I saw this photograph, I knew I had to paint it. I was blown away by the fantastic combination of various shades of red and orange, as well as how nature and traditional architecture complimented each other so well.

This particular scene is of a Japanese torii, which is a traditional gate usually found in front of temples and shrines.
The photo was taken by my friend Dale, who kindly gave me permission to recreate it. He has taken lots of other great pictures which you can view on his photo album site here, but this one was my favourte.

(2011 update: I still consider this one of my best works of all time. This is the painting that inspired my other 'torii' works, all of which have been hugely successful. I've often thought about trying to replicate this one, but I keep hesitating.... Not sure why exactly but there's something about redoing a painting that doesn't quite sit well with me. Maybe it's more the fear that if I tried I'd screw up... I may have to for this one though.)
