This is from a recurring nightmare I had when I was a child concerning the furnace in the basement of my parents old house. The reflection of it's lights on the wall seemed to resemble glowing orange teeth but my imagination carried it to extremes. It was one of those dreams where you're unable to move.
It is obviously a night scene but I had trouble trying to paint darkness while not being too dark to make out the surroundings.

(2011 update: Even when painting using only dark tones and blacks, it is important to use highlights, something I didn't understand back then. Of course it's also important to paint in a way so the viewer has some idea of what they're looking at. Thinking tentatively about redoing this painting sometime.)
