Problem

To create his and her door images for a wine bar. The wine bar will have a subtle retro theme with a focus on space and Mars, and the images need to reflect that. The images also need to be vectors so they can be scaled to any size.

Solution

To get a feel for the look I wanted, I studied retro themed posters from the 50s and 60s. I also took inspiration from spacesuit designs in modern sci-fi movies. I sketched out both images in pencil first to get a rough idea of what I wanted, then once I was satisfied I moved to Illustrator and using only a mouse, I recreated them with the pen tool. I created the background after looking at various photos of Mars and deserts on Earth. Each illustration took roughly 10 hours to finish. I included a line only version at the bottom to give a better idea of the complexity involved.
