Do As Tokyo Does Licence Plate Fun
(Entered Apr. 11, 2008)
  Recent Do As Tokyo Does:

Remember all the fun you had (well at least in Canada) looking for car licence plates that unintentionlly spelled out words? We always had a laugh when we saw a car with FAT on the licence plate, or if you were really patient and lucky, SUK or maybe DIK. Yes, the simple pleasures are often the sweetest...
In Tokyo though there's little fun to be had when walking down the street looking at cars. Only cold meaningless numbers stare back at me. I find myself desperately searching for patterns and am overjoyed when I see something like 38-83 or 23-45 on a licence plate. Anything at all that could make the noisy grey sidewalk and the constant dodging of people fade into the background a little more. Usually such a pursuit goes unrewarded but every once in a while, you get lucky.
Here's the first licence plate ever given out in Japan. Actually this isn't that impressive. I've seen (more than once) cars with plates that have no number at all, just four dots.

A naughty motorcycle.

Licence Plate Japan

Yeah I know, I've got too much time on my hands...
