Chances
are that if you lived in Japan for a while, you've had a chu-hi
or six. A lot of people rely on them for fast and effective drunkeness
(goes down much easier than beer). The first chu-hi tastes like
5 dollar wine, or maybe your home-made juice and vodka cocktail
you made in highschool when you weren't sure how much vodka to add,
but the taste definitely improves as good judgement fades. However
by far the most redeeming quality is the price. A 350 ml. can costs
about a buck fifty, (slighty more than for a can of coke), which
is handy when you don't feel like paying the $20 cover for a bar
and then paying $10 for a drink here in Tokyo. A great way to save
money, many a night was spent in the park with a bunch of cold chu-his
and my other welfare-case friends. Expect to wake up feeling like
you've been kicked in the head though, you've been warned! (Suntory
chu-his also come in Lychee and Plum, but I recommend Grape).
