Artwork - First Set of 2009 (Entered Apr. 07, 2009)     Random Musings...

When I look back at the stuff I did in 2006, the main thought that goes through my head is that a lot of the stuff I did back then looks pretty crappy. Sometimes I feel like I should just take the ones I don't like off completely, but instead, I decided to redo three of the poorer ones (Mt. Fuji, my self portrait and my sister Liz), which you can see directly below to both redeem myself, and to see how much I've improved.
I also included one other painting which is the third in my series of Japanese girls in Kimono/Yukata.

three corrections

This is my new painting of Mt. Fuji based on a photograph (one of my favourites) that my friend Jason took. Have a look at the original to compare. He kindly gave me his permission to reproduce it in oil, and the blueness you see here is almost exactly how it looks in the photograph.

It was the first painting I did this year, and was also the impetus to not only improve on my old painting of Mt. Fuji, which looks a bit childish in comparison, but to improve the other two shown above as well.

Technique: Oil on canvas
Size: M15 (65x45.5 cm)
Price: 50,000 yen

The third in my series of Japanese girls in traditional kimono and yukata.
Once again, I had no reference model to work from, the kimono, face and hair were all done by studying various shots and poses of those subjects. Beause of that, there is a lack of shading on the face that I find makes it look slightly flat. Light and shading on the human face is quite complex and I haven't gotten confident enough yet to tackle this area unless I'm working from a photograph.

It's me.
The second of three paintings that I didn't like and wanted to redo. This is the new and improved version of my token self portrait painting.
As you can see, the position and shape of the features, and the shading of the skin tones look more lifelike now.

Self Portrait 2009

Technique: Oil on canvas
Size: F4 (33x24 cm)
Price: 20,000 yen

My youngest sister in a meaningfully artistic pose, a large white space above her head and a light switch signifying, you know, 'things'. The picture (and the unusual title) were taken from a group of photos that Liz posted on Facebook. I have no idea if she'll be ok with me reproducing them here. Liz, any comments?

Liz is the first family memeber I painted way back in 2006, and you can compare the rough job I made of it back then to this new one.

I've been working on portraits more, and this will be the first in a series of paintings I do of my siblings, starting with Liz, the youngest, and finishing with me, the oldest.
Just for your info, my above self portrait is not part of this set as I want all four paintings to be the same size.

Anyway, Steve, you're next.
