English Teaching... (Entered Jul. 14, 2005)     When in Tokyo...

It's no wonder that English teachers and English schools in Japan are looked down upon by not only many Japanese people, but by other long term foreigners living here as well. This industry that once was perhaps 'real', has over time become mostly a joke. Being an English teacher myself who actually tries to take the job seriously, I find myself ashamed to admit to everyone and anyone what it is I do. Why!?? One problem is the English schools themselves. Often refered to as 'the McDonald's of English schools', NOVA is so called because it's the largest and best known English school chain in Japan, but also for it's production line teaching methods, and generally low quality atmosphere. Not only that, but prices are ridiculously high. Other large companies like Berlitz, GEOS and AEON aren't far behind on the list. There are some good schools out there of course, (like the one I work at :-), but we're in the minority.

The other problem has to do with many of the 'teachers', (mostly men) who view English teaching in Japan as nothing more than a chance to make it with as many Japanese girls as they can before heading back home after their one year contract is up. These guys come here fresh out of university with no teaching experience whatsoever and Japanese people expect to learn English?
The effects are showing though. Most big schools are losing money and/or going bankrupt as more Japanese people lose interest in English and turn to other pastimes.
So after a rant like this, the obvious question is: Just how long do I intend to stay here teaching English?? The answer unfortunately is not so obvious.
